According to the International Labor Organization, social justice is about promoting justice and the value of material equality by eliminating social barriers. In other words, when we talk about social justice, we encompass actions that fight poverty, exclusion, prejudice, unemployment and other stigmas of social segregation.
It is an extremely important issue and it is becoming increasingly relevant around the world, with an increase in income concentration and, therefore, poverty and inequality. Therefore, since 2009, the 20th of February reaffirms, throughout the world, the commitment of countries to generate national and international decent work policies for all, as well as policies to reduce poverty. In addition, the World Day for Social Justice highlights the importance of equality in achieving and maintaining peace and security within nations.
Thus, promoting social justice requires governments, companies and societies around the world to work together.
Agenda 2030 is a global pact between UN member countries. It is an action plan to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure that people achieve peace and prosperity. In other words, the Agenda 2030 is a proposal to promote social justice and sustainable development, in economic, social and environmental aspects, based on cooperation and collaboration.
To this end, the Agenda 2030 established 169 goals and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be developed in the coming years. The purpose is to encourage countries to adopt effective actions to improve people’s lives.
Thus, the State is primarily responsible for social justice and guaranteeing basic rights for the population. But it ends up finding limitations in the implementation and execution of public policies. Therefore, it is also the duty of the State to guarantee private initiative and civil society the right and duty to contribute to social justice.
In practice, the Third Sector is a link between governments and companies, seeking to fill the existing gaps, calling on the State to fulfill its duties, guiding the citizen and supporting the private initiative to fulfill its social responsibility. The Third Sector develops projects that contribute to a more just, egalitarian and socially just society. The Ramacrisna Institute is one such organization, which works to benefit people excluded from government policies, providing access to services such as education and food.
In addition, the Third Sector works as an activator of entrepreneurs interested in contributing to a better world and monitors government actions to ensure social justice.
The Ramacrisna Institute has several projects related to social justice. Since its founding 63 years ago, it has contributed to transforming the lives of nearly 2 million people.
Ramacrisna works to promote education, professional training and learning for young people and adults in social vulnerability. It is the case of professional courses and the Adolescent Apprendice program.
It also offers workshops and artistic, cultural and sports activities for children and teenagers. This is what happens, for example, through the Ramacrisna Educational Support Center, Arlindo Corrêa da Silva Library and the Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra.
Despite not being the Institute’s main activity, there are also donations of food, toys, hygiene and cleaning materials and the distribution of meals, helping to fight hunger and guaranteeing basic living conditions.
