Children’s book: how to choose the most suitable for the child’s age?

Reading brings numerous benefits to the formation of a child in addition to being a great form of distraction for the little ones. Therefore, it is important that the interaction occurs in early childhood.

According to experts, the children’s book can be inviting for the child, stimulating the imagination and stimulating the way to understand the world.

But when choosing a copy, many people have doubts about which ones please the little ones and bring the appropriate benefits. Therefore, we have prepared a guide with the indications for each age.

Children’s book guide

Contact with literature can occur from the first days of life. Between zero and five months, the recommendation is to choose children’s books that are made of resistant materials, such as cloth or plastic.

The copies must have few pages and contain many figures. During the interaction, it is important that parents or guardians interact with the story, pointing to the figures in the book, saying the words aloud, making it easier for the baby to understand what they are observing. Another tip is to represent with gestures or voice the figure that is indicating.

Between six months and one year, children’s books should have textures, colored figures and illustrations that arouse attention. It is also important that they are made of resistant materials, so that the baby can interact with the pages, popups and fingers.

When the child is between 1 and 3 years old, choose texts that are rhyming and rich in repetitions, such as poetry and fables in verse. The children’s book for this age should be rich in illustrations, allowing practice of naming and describing scenes. In addition, specimens with images in different formats and textures help to explore the touch.

For children in late infancy, ages 3 to 6, books with long stories and fewer pictures are best. This is the case of fairy tales, fables and classic authors of children’s literature. To make the moment more interesting, ask the child to retell the story, stimulating language and memory.

For literate children

When the child learns to read, the children’s book helps to create autonomy and self-confidence. In addition, it can be a great way to stimulate values. Therefore, for readers aged 6 to 8 years, experts recommend books with longer stories, with scenarios, villains and heroes.

Already between 8 and 10 years old, books should have stories with a beginning, middle and end. In the plot, themes of social interaction, such as friendship and respect for differences, for example.

Finally, in late childhood, up to age 12, stories should have denser plots and more elaborate language. It’s also time to explore different textual genres, such as short stories, chronicles, novels, science fiction and romance, for example.

The Professor Arlindo Corrêa da Silva Library has more than 9,000 books in its collection. To encourage the habit in children and adolescents, storytelling and reading mediations are carried out. Additionally, all volumes are available for loan to community residents of all ages.

“When the library gives readers autonomy to access collections, give opinions on acquisitions and participate in planning and actions, the reader feels an integral and active part. In addition to empowering, this brings the public closer, which creates the habit of reading”, explains the coordinator of the Library, Cleide Moura.

The Library develops several projects to encourage reading, such as Mala de Leitura. It is a suitcase with approximately 40 books and it transforms into an “exhibitor shelf” when it is opened. Through it, several educational institutions are visited with an itinerant library and receive book donations.
