Inside Ramacrisna: discover the story of Leonardo Abras

Education and knowledge can bring improvements in the lives of children and young people. The Ramacrisna Institute believes in this. And, in the sixth chapter of the series “Inside Ramacrisna”, you can see the story of one of the young people who found many opportunities here at the Institute.

Leonardo Abras

It was at the age of 8 that Leonardo began to participate in the activities of the Ramacrisna Institute. As a child, he was part of the Escola da Gente School of the People) project and the Ramacrisna Educational Support Center. But it was when he was 15 years old that he joined Escola Multimídia (Multimedia School), in 2016. There, he took theoretical and practical classes in journalism, photography, cinematography and image/video editing.

Upon completion of the course, Leonardo was hired as a Teen Apprentice to work at the Producer Antenados. This was Léo’s first employment experience and it brought lessons to his daily life that he uses to this day in the professions he chose to exercise: Developer and Videographer.

During this same period, Leonardo had contact not only with a producer, but also participated in the English course offered by Ramacrisna sponsored by the US Consulate in Belo Horizonte. “It was really amazing. While I was a young apprentice, I took an English course at the American consulate. So I did all my training in English through the sponsorship of Ramacrisna and the Consulate, with a scholarship that some people had”, he recalls.

Technology

If until now you only know Leo’s history in audiovisual, it’s time to introduce you to the developer’s side. At the end of his training as a young apprentice, in 2018, Leonardo enrolled in the Computer Operator and Local Networks course. And that’s where the passion for the technology area came from!

A few months after completing the course, a new opportunity arose: a 50% scholarship to graduate in Information Systems, in a partnership between Ramacrisna and the Rotary Club Calgary West of Canada, through its president Benjamin Kormos. The other 50% were financed by the University for All Program (PROUNI). And today he is in his sixth period of college. “I took part in Educational Robotics, Computer Operator and the Multimedia School course. All of this gave me opportunities to get where I am, to enter higher education”, he says.

And the plans for the end of graduation are already defined: in addition to financing higher education, the scholarship also provides the opportunity for a one-year exchange in Canada, to study, work and specialize.

In addition to college, currently, Leonardo helps transform the lives of other young people. He is an employee of the Antenados Producer. In addition to training young people, Antenados provides audiovisual services to social organizations and companies. Among the services offered are institutional video production, event registration, internet videos, institutional photography, photographic recording of events, among others.

“Being an employee is very nice. Here at the Producer, we have the opportunity to meet new people, teach new people and also learn about the audiovisual market. Being an employee is that: being helped and helping other people’s lives too”, he highlights. In addition to Ramacrisna, Léo has his own production company – the Unir Filmes – who specializes in marriage records.

Family in Ramacrisna

Leonardo’s older brother, Filipe, also has a history with Ramacrisna. And it’s very similar to Léo’s: he has also participated in courses since he was a child and was an instructor at Antenados Producer. “He was an inspiration for me, to work here at the Producer and for the audiovisual. Today, I’m more focused on the technology area, but the audiovisual is my main source of income”, explains Leonardo.

Like Leonardo and Filipe, Ramacrisna Institute helps transform the lives of thousands of children and young people. Do you want to know more about our projects and how to help these young people? Contact us.
