How to fight modern slavery and underemployment?

Have you ever heard of modern slavery? Many people refuse to believe it, but almost 200 years after abolition, there are still workers in a situation of slavery in the country. It’s what scholars call modern slavery, and it affects even children all over the world..

According to the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, in the last 10 years, more than 13,600 people were rescued from conditions of modern slavery. In 2021 alone, it was 1930 across the country. In 2022, there are already more than 200 cases.

In addition, from 2017 to June this year, the Labor Court judged more than 10,000 cases involving the recognition of the employment relationship of workers in conditions analogous to slavery.

What is modern slavery?

When we talk about modern slavery, it is about work relationships in which people are forced to carry out an activity against their will, through forms of intimidation. It can be by threat, detention, physical or psychological violence, for example.

It is different from ancient slavery, practiced in Brazil from 1500 to 1888. At that time, it was legal for a person to be the property of another, working without any form of remuneration and receiving physical punishment. Today all this is a crime.

According to Walk Free, a civil organization fighting modern slavery, even developed countries report cases of work analogous to slavery. Worldwide, 45.8 million people are enslaved. Of these, 4.5 million are children.

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), for every four people enslaved in Brazil, one is a child.

Modern slavery vs underemployment

While in modern slavery the person performs forced labor, in underemployment he performs a job with low quality and low remuneration. Most of the time, these workers do not have labor rights and live informally.

According to the ILO, there is a profile of people who are more susceptible to underemployment: very young people looking for their first job, or even those who have difficulty finding work for a long time and end up “grabbing what appears”.
