How to encourage the participation of women in technology

When thinking about the area of technology, it is common to imagine a mostly male environment, but this is a thing of the past. Or rather, not even from the past, when we search history, we find references such as Ada Lovelace, the first programmer in history, and Mary Kenneth Keller, the first woman to receive a graduate degree in computing, but there is still little incentive for the inclusion of women in technology.

In recent years, women’s interest in IT has increased. According to data from the Microsoft research institute, only 25% of people employed by IT companies are women. On the other hand, they are the ones with the highest level of education.

Challenges and Opportunities

Breaking this cultural barrier is one of the challenges for women, who also face difficulties in entering the labor market. A survey carried out by the website Catho, in partnership with UP WITH, showed that 34% of women working in the IT sector earn less than men.

But, with the growing demand for qualified professionals, the IT market has started to open its doors to these women specialists and, best of all, this insertion has paid off! A report done in 2018 by Delivering Through Diversity, proved that companies with more diverse teams and women leaders increase their profitability, retain people and make better decisions.

Ramacrisna and women in technology

The Ramacrisna Institute believes in education as a means of transforming the lives of young people. With courses in several areas, the field of technology is present in the teaching grid. And the female presence has increased, as in the case of the Educational Robotics course, in which Raissa Cardoso is enrolled. The student says that having other girl colleagues in the course gave her more security and the certainty that she can occupy this space.

“I felt welcomed because the course members were mostly girls, so I felt really at home. It’s very difficult to get that feeling in these places, where most are boys. It will be the knowledge, learning and socialization I had here that I will take with me for a lifetime”.

Check out the testimony of Raissa and other students of the Robotics course:

According to the vice president of the Ramacrisna Institute, Solange Bottaro, “the number of students interested in technology courses demonstrates the confidence and competence of the young women in qualifying and being inserted in the market, contributing to demystify the argument that they do not get a place of stand out in the sector, on the contrary, as they are more observant and efficient in this role”..

In addition to the Educational Robotics course, the Ramacrisna Institute offers courses in Industrial Robotics, Computer Operator and Local Area Networks, Basic Computing and the Beginner Software Programmer Bootcamp, conducted by IGTI.
