Chess classes have been part of the activity schedule at the Ramacrisna Institute since 2016, when the Solidarity Chess project was created in partnership with Crea Cultura and the Minas Gerais Chess Federation. Since then, many children and teenagers have participated in the workshops, developing skills in both the game and life. In other words, the project goes beyond chess lessons. It’s a way to transform lives. Learn more about the initiative below.
Instructor Bruno Jacomini has been responsible for the activities since the beginning of the project. For him, it’s clear that chess classes have a positive impact on students’ lives, being much more than just a game. It’s also a powerful tool for developing essential skills in children and teenagers.
Chess classes take place twice a week and are part of the activities for students at the Ramacrisna Educational Support Center (CAER). Additionally, the project also supports a special team of students who receive more intensive training focused on professionalizing the sport. “Our sessions are carefully planned so that students can continually progress in both pedagogical and technical aspects,” he says.
The classes focus on the tripod of learning, fun, and results. “We believe that learning should be an enjoyable process since when students have fun, content absorption occurs more naturally and effectively. With this, we achieve significant results both on and off the board. During the year, we serve around 200 students, divided into learning cycles. Meanwhile, the chess team trains permanently, always striving to improve their techniques and strategies,” he points out.
The impact of the project goes beyond chess classes. This is because Ramacrisna students excel in regional and state competitions, winning awards in events such as the Minas Gerais Category Championships, Minas Gerais School Games, Minas Gerais School Chess Circuit, and Betim Student Games, for example. “These achievements are not just a reflection of the students’ talent but also of the collective effort of the entire team involved in the project,” he says.
The sessions vary according to the students’ knowledge level, covering everything from basic chess rules to more advanced techniques. This flexible format allows both beginners and more experienced players to have their needs met, ensuring that everyone can progress at their own pace.
Moreover, chess classes contribute to individual development. Chess is an excellent tool for developing various skills such as creativity, teamwork, logical reasoning, and decision-making, for example.
“The project isn’t just about teaching a game; it’s about shaping citizens who are better prepared for life’s challenges. Chess teaches the importance of patience, planning, and resilience—skills that our students will carry with them in all areas of their lives. Every game played, every decision made on the board reflects the learning journey that transforms them into more confident and capable individuals,” he observes.
“Being part of this transformation is a rewarding experience, and each year, I’m more motivated to continue contributing to our students’ growth, both as players and as individuals. Chess is undoubtedly a powerful tool for building a better future, and I’m proud to be part of this story at the Ramacrisna Institute,” he concludes.
For 65 years, the Ramacrisna Institute has been working to improve the lives of millions of people in social vulnerability living in 12 cities in the Greater Belo Horizonte area. The projects include healthy, safe, and free options for leisure, sports, culture, education, professional training, and integration into the job market.
