Inside Ramacrisna: how a vocational course changed Cleonice Nascimento’s life

Cleonice Nascimento found in Ramacrisna the support she needed to rewrite her professional history

The search for new paths is not always easy, but it can be the start of a transformation. For Cleonice Nascimento, a student on the professional training course of the Ramacrisna Institute’s Building the Future project, this change began when she decided to invest in herself through specialization.

With a degree in administration, Cleonice has built a solid career in the corporate market, but motherhood has brought new challenges. After the birth of her twins, she found it difficult to reconcile her career with her new responsibilities. “For a long time, I couldn’t work and, when I started again, I couldn’t keep my job for more than six months. The burden that society places on women is much heavier. But staying stagnant was unacceptable to me,” she says.

New possibilities

It was on a simple walk through the neighborhood that Cleonice came across the Ramacrisna Institute and found the support she needed to begin her professional reinvention. Browsing the institution’s website, she was surprised by the variety of vocational courses on offer. It was then that she decided that the locksmith course would be her first step.

“I always passed the project center in the neighborhood and it caught my attention. I decided to do some research and was surprised by the number of courses on offer. I’ve always loved the beauty area, so I signed up for the professional course in hairdressing. It was wonderful, it opened up a whole range of professional possibilities and reminded me that it’s never too late to change careers,” she says.

The locksmith course gave Cleonice not only a new professional skill, but also a profound impact on her self-esteem and motivation. This is because, during the classes, she met other women with similar stories and found support from both the teachers and the staff at the Institute.

“The Ramacrisna team has been incredible throughout the process. The teachers and staff believe in us and help us to believe too. This experience has changed the way I see my future,” she says.

Next steps

Now that she has finished the classes and has her certificate in hand, Cleonice is already planning for the future. Her goal is to open her own beauty salon, starting in her own home. “I’m getting ready to open my salon, but I’m already thinking of taking other courses to expand my services and offer something complete to my clients,” she explains.

As well as making her own dreams come true, Cleonice is inspired by the stories of other students on the course who, like her, have managed to transform their lives. For her, the Ramacrisna Institute was more than a professional opportunity: it was a fresh start.

How to take a vocational course

The Ramacrisna Institute offers a wide range of free vocational courses that meet the demands of the job market and provide opportunities for young people and adults who want to build a new career path. In this way, students have access to practical, up-to-date training that goes beyond technical content and also promotes the development of behavioral skills, such as teamwork, leadership and resilience.

The Building the Future VI project, carried out in partnership with Petrobras through the Petrobras Socio-Environmental program, includes professional and educational qualification courses in the areas of:

  • Reinforcement in math and Portuguese;
  • barbering;
  • manicure and pedicure;
  • hairdresser;
  • locksmith;
  • eyebrow design;
  • car and motorcycle mechanics;
  • industrial robotics;
  • electrical/photovoltaic;
  • reception and customer service.

The classes are open to teenagers, young people and adults aged between 16 and 45 who are socially vulnerable and live in the neighborhoods of Imbiruçu and Petrovale, in Betim, and in the cities of Ibirité and Sarzedo-regions surrounding REGAP. In addition to classes, the project offers sports activities for children and teenagers.

Finally, the project includes entrepreneurship courses and business modeling consultancy for young people and adults in socially vulnerable situations, aged between 18 and 45.  In all, the project will benefit 4,362 people directly and 17,448 people indirectly, including family members and participants in the events and tournaments.
