How to fight modern slavery and underemployment?

Each year, more than a thousand people are rescued from degrading work situations, called modern slavery. Investing in learning projects can help change the picture

Have you ever heard of modern slavery? Many people refuse to believe it, but almost 200 years after abolition, there are still workers in a situation of slavery in the country. It’s what scholars call modern slavery, and it affects even children all over the world..

According to the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, in the last 10 years, more than 13,600 people were rescued from conditions of modern slavery. In 2021 alone, it was 1930 across the country. In 2022, there are already more than 200 cases.

In addition, from 2017 to June this year, the Labor Court judged more than 10,000 cases involving the recognition of the employment relationship of workers in conditions analogous to slavery.

Along with underemployment, slavery takes away the dignity of the worker and impedes people’s personal, moral and intellectual growth. In this blog post, you understand each of the concepts and discover how learning can help combat this problem.

What is modern slavery?

When we talk about modern slavery, it is about work relationships in which people are forced to carry out an activity against their will, through forms of intimidation. It can be by threat, detention, physical or psychological violence, for example.

It is different from ancient slavery, practiced in Brazil from 1500 to 1888. At that time, it was legal for a person to be the property of another, working without any form of remuneration and receiving physical punishment. Today all this is a crime.

According to Walk Free, a civil organization fighting modern slavery, even developed countries report cases of work analogous to slavery. Worldwide, 45.8 million people are enslaved. Of these, 4.5 million are children.

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), for every four people enslaved in Brazil, one is a child.

Modern slavery vs underemployment

While in modern slavery the person performs forced labor, in underemployment he performs a job with low quality and low remuneration. Most of the time, these workers do not have labor rights and live informally.

According to the ILO, there is a profile of people who are more susceptible to underemployment: very young people looking for their first job, or even those who have difficulty finding work for a long time and end up “grabbing what appears”.

Benefits of learning

In the learning contacts, teenagers from 14 years old can work, with a written contract and with a term of up to two years, with the possibility of rehiring. In the document, the company undertakes to guarantee technical-professional training in accordance with its physical, moral and psychological development. In the same way, the young person undertakes to do all the tasks necessary for the formation.

In addition, it must be noted in the Work Card. Young people are paid in proportion to the minimum wage. The apprentice still enjoys all the labor and social security rights that other employees do. And the teenager also goes through a professional training course, which makes it possible to better exercise the role of apprentice and better qualify for the job market..

To hire a young apprentice, the company needs to establish a partnership with a training institution. That is, the organization responsible for the theoretical classes. Practical lessons take place in the contracting company. Since 2005, the Ramacrisna Institute has been training these teenagers.

Your company can become a partner of Ramacrisna’s Adolescent Apprentice project, adapting to the Apprenticeship Law. In addition, it also receives tax and tax incentives. In this way, they can contribute to the formation of a teenager according to the company’s culture, and there may be.

According to legislation, companies with more than seven employees must hire apprentices. On the other hand, non-profit entities and small businesses are not required to be hired, but can participate in the project.
