The journalist Arlindo Corrêa da Silva always dreamed of contributing to society and helping others. Silva came to Minas Gerais in the 40’s; in the mid 50’s, he came to the conclusion that education was the best way to prevent social problems and started working with eight children, whom he took from the streets to his own home, in Belo Horizonte.
In 1959, he registered the Social Organization in a notary office, under the name of the Indian philosopher Sri Ramakrishna, an ecumenist who lived during the 19th century and preached social work as a way of transforming human beings.
As the number of children increased, the space became smaller, thus, with the help of friends, he begun to buy some lots in Betim. In 1960, Silva started to build the Institute. In 1963, he inaugurated the first building and, in the following year, the second, which functioned as a boarding school until 1992.
The founder passed away in 1993 but left behind a deliberative council to run Ramacrisna.
Since 1992, the Institute has been developing partnerships with the city halls of Betim and Esmeraldas, with the aim of enhancing its actions regarding low-cost food, while increasing the level of education, professional training and social assistance.
