International Youth Day: What are the challenges for Young Brazilian Girls?

Young women, historically, are the most difficult part of getting a job in the job market. On International Youth Day, learn about Ramacrisna’s initiatives to overcome this difficulty

The profile of those looking for a job for more than two years in Brazil are women, young and with low education. For every three unemployed workers, two are women. Half of the people who are unemployed for a long time are between 17 and 29 years old.

Of the total, 80% of young people unemployed for more than two years have low qualifications. That is, at most, they have a high school level – 38% of them do not even have this level of education. The data are from a survey by the Ministry of Economy that reveals the difficulty of young women in finding a job.

On this international youth day, the Instituto Ramacrisna promotes a reflection on the reality of young people in the job market

International Youth Day: What to Celebrate?

This is a historical problem. For a long time, women were prohibited from exercising economic activities outside the home. In the case of the poorest, they needed to find some form of remuneration and were submitted to low-quality jobs, since they did not have access to schooling.

Over the years, women have gained space, increasing their professional training, but there are still losses. For starters, when hiring, it is not uncommon for employers to prefer male professionals, especially in technology-related positions.

If the woman is a mother or intends to have a child, the situation is even worse. To try to change reality, it would be necessary to create public policies to reduce inequality and prejudice against female workers. In addition to expanding vacancies and opening hours for day care centers and schools and ending the culture of dismissals after the end of maternity leave.

In the meantime, Ramacrisna is doing its part, working on the qualification of girls and young people. Focusing on professionalization as a tool to improve the lives of thousands of families.

Net Girls

In 2022, Ramacrisna started the Net Girls in project, with the support of Criança Esperança in partnership with TV Globo and UNESCO. Focused exclusively on girls, the initiative seeks to include them in the areas of Technology and Innovation, dominated by men. Two classes have already completed the course.

In the project, the students participate in programming classes, development of technological tools, chess, human management, Industry 4.0 and IOT. In addition to sports and cultural activities. In this way, the project introduces girls to innovation, with an incentive for education.

In the Technology and Programming Activities, the students learn the processes of application development, incorporation of interfaces and user experience. In addition, the girls meet female references in the area of technology that serve as inspiration for young women. Finally, at the conclusion of the classes, the students develop a mobile application.

For the vice president of Ramacrisna, Solange Bottaro, the project is innovative and opens new horizons and possibilities for women in areas predominantly occupied by the male gender. “Young girls are virtually excluded from the tech industry because of the social and gender challenges they face on a daily basis. However, the commitment and resourcefulness of these girls in learning make it very clear that the investment made through the Net Girls project and the trust placed in them by the Instituto Ramacrisna were worth it. They will certainly have a bright future,” she argues.
