Since June 2005, the Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra has been promoting musical training for preteens and teens.

What is the power of classical music in the formation of children and teenagers? According to researchers from the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, music is a tool for promoting health, physical, intellectual and emotional development.

In addition to being a way to expand knowledge of the world and even discover new skills and talents. For this reason, the Ramacrisna has promoted, since 2005, activities for teenagers and young people aged between 12 and 24 at the Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra. Learn more below.

Role of music

The Federação de Santa Maria study, too, that music awakens young people to develop a way to increase capacity. It can thus help learning, making it pleasurable for both the physical and psychic bodies. In addition, contributions contribute to the formation of the identity of each individual.

But not only that. Music has the ability to directly influence the emotional state of a human being, and can be both a calming and a stimulant. That is, musical perception depends on several factors, reaching areas of the brain and influencing the entire body.

While rock music, for example, works as a stimulant, making a person more agitated, researchers believe that classical music has the opposite effect. That is, it makes the individual have more focus, increasing attention. In addition, it is an important means of expressing feelings and emotions, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.

Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra

The Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra came about by chance: the Institute received the donation of seven violins, despite not yet developing any music-related project.

Ramacrisna sought the support of another non-profit institution that allocated funds for the purchase of other instruments and the hiring of a Maestro. Afterwards, he held a meeting with the students’ parents to explain how an orchestra works, the instruments were presented and how the classes would be and how the learning of the instruments would work.

Several months later, the first performance took place in the community church. In the audience, proud families and the seed of a new project: the Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra.

This happened in June 2005, 17 years ago. Since then, Ramacrisna has received 40 students in situations of personal and social risk from the community of Vianópolis, in Betim, aged between 12 and 24 years. In music theory and practice classes, they get to know the beauty of the classical music universe.

Classes are divided into three types of instruments: string, wind and percussion. The lessons are led by the teachers of the Barros family, Alexandre, on wind instruments, Elias, on violins, and William, on music theory, orchestra bass and cello. In addition to them, Maestro Eliseu commands the mission of promoting the musical development of these talented musicians.

Maestro explains that the main work developed with the students is in the management part. “Because we notice a lot of low self-esteem issues. Many students arrive with their self-love completely destroyed, not feeling capable. So, our job is to show that it is possible for them to succeed in life as a musician”, he says.

He also explains that, many times, the emotional barrier is the biggest challenge for the formation of students. “So, this is the main work that we develop. Because learning doesn’t have much of a problem: they are very talented and smart and learn their lessons quickly,” he says..

The Ramacrisna Youth Orchestra, then, is the way students find to get to know a new world, both culturally and socially. “They are very talented students who, if they practice, can enter a magical world that music offers. From colleges, professional orchestras, jobs as a musician and even teaching, for example. So, it’s about expanding horizons and dreams”, completes the maestro.
