Initiative aims to raise awareness about preventing wildfires, which have been devastating the country

This past Monday afternoon, September 23rd, an impactful educational initiative took place in the community of Vianópolis, Betim. In celebration of Arbor Day, students from the Ramacrisna Educational Support Center (CAER), part of Instituto Ramacrisna, teamed up with Betim’s Animal Protection Department (Sepa) and the Municipal Guard to lead an environmental awareness campaign. The goal of this collaborative effort was to educate the community about wildfire prevention and global warming, in alignment with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.

The theme was chosen in response to the significant increase in wildfires across Brazil, which have devastated natural areas and impacted local wildlife and ecosystems. Throughout the week, students participated in various activities designed to engage them on the topic, culminating in their role as community advocates. “Environmental education is a powerful tool, especially when introduced early in life. Discussing these issues with children fosters awareness and helps them become advocates for positive change in their families and communities. The grim reality our country is facing, with the rise in wildfires, directly affects their future. That’s why we work to ensure our students understand they can make a difference, whether through small daily actions or larger initiatives like this educational campaign,” explains CAER coordinator, Janara Gomes.

During the campaign, students wore masks depicting local wildlife, paying tribute to species losing their habitats due to the fires. In collaboration with Betim’s Municipal Guard, they handed out educational pamphlets to residents and passing vehicles, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of environmental preservation.

The event concluded at Fazenda Dom Silvestre, which had recently suffered a devastating fire that destroyed much of its pastures and protected areas. There, students planted trees as a symbolic act of reforestation and donated 50 additional seedlings, provided by SEPA, to support the area’s recovery.

UN Global Compact Participation

This initiative coincides with Instituto Ramacrisna’s recent commitment to the United Nations Global Compact, reaffirming the institution’s dedication to sustainable development in line with ten universal principles that include human rights, environmental protection, and anti-corruption efforts.

For the Institute’s Vice President, Solange Bottaro, this is a significant milestone. “We are reaffirming our responsibility to act ethically and with a commitment to the future of our planet and the next generations,” she stated.
