How the Women’s World Cup Can Help Girls

With the popularization of the Women’s World Cup, more girls will have contact with the sport

Do you still think football is just for boys? The Women’s World Cup is there to show that this is not the case. The stars of 32 selections are showing everyone how women are the true owners of the ball.

Games take place in Australia and New Zealand. The Brazilian team has names like Andressa and Marta to win an unprecedented title for the country. Increasingly, the Women’s World Cup has become popular, breaking stereotypes and attracting the attention of more girls.

How to follow the Women’s World Cup

Since 2019, the championship has been shown on open TV. This time it will be no different. In addition, for the first time, the Women’s World Cup will be broadcast live over the internet, by Cazé TV, on YouTube.

Another unprecedented fact that contributes to the popularization of the tournament is a federal government ordinance that establishes that the days of the women’s team games are optional for federal public servants. This measure is already a tradition in relation to the men’s soccer World Cup. Some private companies should adopt the same standard.

Still, few people know about the Cup. A survey carried out by the Quaest institute showed that 55% of Brazilian fans were unaware of the competition. Misinformation is even greater among women: 66% of them said they did not know about the tournament.

In the same way that they are more informed about the games, men also showed more interest in the competition: 75% intend to follow the matches.

Popularization of women’s football

More and more girls have surrendered to soccer and seeing the stars on the field is quite an incentive for them to be interested in the sport. At Instituto Ramacrisna, for example, CAER girls have this opportunity.

In the morning classes, as the number of students is smaller, there are not enough girls to assemble the teams. Therefore, they play together with the boys, as equals. Already in the afternoon, the girls play only among themselves. In all, about 30 students from the Institute participate in the activity.

Sport brings many benefits to athletes, such as reducing body fat, improving flexibility, agility and concentration. In addition, it is a great opportunity for psychological and social development. This is because, during matches, the girls learn to make decisions, deal with frustrations, respect their opponents and work as a team.

Not to mention the friendships and all the fun that only sport provides. For the Ramacrisna Saimon instructor Felipe Rodrigues Rocha, sport has a great meaning for the girls. “I understand that women’s football, more than a sport, is a symbol of resistance and overcoming prejudices. Experiencing the reality of each of our students up close, I realize the importance that football has in the lives of each one, and how significant the sport is in their lives. Some with the dream of changing their family’s history through football, others for leisure, and others just wanting to break down the barriers of prejudice that are still rooted through structural machismo. But all of them have the same sparkle in their eyes, and when they’re on the court, that’s where they put their all and forget about all the sadness in life”, he explained.

The Institute also hosts training sessions for the Galácticas F.C. team, a team created in 2019, in addition to having already helped raise funds via public notice. The players have also participated in lectures on gender equality and female empowerment at Ramacrisna.
