ESG: what are the environmental actions of Instituto Ramacrisna?

The ESG Agenda refers to business and investment practices that are concerned with social, environmental and governance sustainability.

ESG is an acronym for Environmental, Social and Governance. It is a concept that describes how much an organization uses means to minimize its impacts on the environment, cares about people and adopts good administrative practices.

At Ramacrisna, the theme is increasingly gaining prominence in our activities. Next, you will find out how the Institute works with the environment.

Even before the creation of the term ESG, Ramacrisna was already investing in environmental practices for the conservation of spaces and support for the Institute’s social actions. From small activities such as the reduction and reuse of office supplies, to the installation of clean and renewable energy plates.

In addition, Ramacrisna plays a fundamental role in the environmental education of children and adolescents, helping to improve the relationship between the community and nature.

Why invest in the environment?

Ramacrisna believes that the preservation of the Environment is a key factor for the quality of life that the next generations will inherit on our planet. For this reason, we work on continuing education offered to children, youth and adults participating in the project, who multiply these values with their families and communities..

And that happens in small day-to-day actions. The vice president of the Institute, Solange Bottaro, highlights that the location is an important factor in encouraging preservation. “As we are located in a rural area, surrounded by a vegetation that we preserve, it is a way of raising awareness among our students. It is a work with children from the age of 6 for them to understand that all people are responsible for building a better world”, she explains.

Children and adolescents act as influencers of information, taking it to the family and the community. “Our awareness-raising work has been going on since 1974, when there were no Sustainable Development Goals, ESG or anything else to guide our pioneering actions”, she highlights.

In addition to participating in discussions about the environment, the Institute also carries out the following actions:

Oil recycling

All the oil used in the Automobile Mechanics School and in the Fencing Factory is destined for a partner company, which carries out the treatment and improvement of the material.

Energy efficiency

Carried out in partnership with Cemig, it replaced motors, light bulbs and wires for more efficient performance. All the Institution’s lamps are LED.

Compost

Started in 2014, the composting work reuses organic kitchen waste, in addition to dry leaves and grass clippings.

The material is maturing for 4 months, when the compost is then removed and left for another month to enjoy. The process is separated by wooden playpens and plaques with dates. When the compost is transformed into organic fertilizer, it is used in the gardens of Ramacrisna.

Solar water heating

With vacuum tubes, the hot water promotes the hygiene of all the material used in the kitchen and food more economically, in addition to heating the buffet and showers.

Photovoltaic plant

In August 2020, a photovoltaic plant was installed at Ramacrisna. Through solar panels, installed on roofs, clean and renewable energy is generated.

Since then, Ramacrisna has been able to save 80% on its electricity bill, corresponding to around BRL 60 thousand per year, which are destined to social projects..

“It is a way of reversing all the pollution and destruction that has been occurring for decades with energy exploitation. Everything that the Institute manages to promote is in this sense, of using everything that is positive, preserving the environment and still managing to reverse the value to improve service, for more people and with more quality”, adds Solange.

“We are 100% sustainable in terms of clean and renewable energy”, she concludes. In addition to installing the plant at the Institute, Ramacrisna participates in a group with the Rotary Club BH Liberdade, which enabled the construction of four other structures in social organizations: one in Ibirité, another in Belo Horizonte and two more in Montes Claros.

In partnership with BrazilFoundation, Ramacrisna participated in the installation of a photovoltaic plant in Igarapé.

In addition, in the electrician course, students also learn to install photovoltaic panels. Thus, the whole process complements each other, training and qualifying people and giving support to people who want to have photovoltaic energy at home. The professionalization course is exclusive to Ramacrisna in the state.
