Environment and social impact: sustainable actions that make a difference

In addition to transforming lives, it is essential to create ways to preserve the environment for future generations.

Caring for the environment and generating social impact can go hand in hand. This is a priority for the Ramacrisna Institute. The institution believes that caring for nature and social development are fundamental to building a sustainable and fair future. For this reason, it integrates sustainable practices into its activities, courses, and projects, directly impacting the lives of thousands of people and preserving the environment.

Below, learn about our initiatives:

How to combine the environment and social impact?

As a Third Sector Organization, Ramacrisna works to make the world a better place. In other words, in addition to providing better opportunities for people in socially vulnerable situations, it is essential to create ways to preserve the environment for future generations.

That is why it is essential to include sustainable measures in the institution’s daily activities. In Ramacrisna’s professional training courses, environmental education is a priority. The electrician course, for example, teaches the installation of photovoltaic systems—solar panels that generate clean and renewable energy. Thus, in addition to qualifying students for the job market, the course encourages them to become agents of sustainability in their communities.

Ramacrisna goes beyond theory and practices sustainability on a daily basis. The Automotive Mechanics School and the Fence Factory, for example, send all used oil to a specialized partner company, which properly treats and reuses this material, preventing soil and water contamination.

Composting and trail

In celebration of Green June, students from the Ramacrisna Educational Support Center (CAER) participated in a special program that combined music, education, and contact with nature. They performed a musical presentation with songs that encouraged reflection on the environment and the social impact of human actions.

Following this, a practical composting class taught students the importance and step-by-step process of composting, strengthening environmental awareness from an early age. To conclude, the students took a walk along the Institute’s EcoTrail—a 15-minute ecological trail through native forest, which promotes direct contact with local biodiversity and reinforces the importance of nature preservation.

Since 2014, Ramacrisna has maintained a composting project that reuses organic kitchen waste, dry leaves, and grass clippings. The material undergoes a controlled process, with four months of maturation and an additional month of curing, transforming it into high-quality organic fertilizer.

This fertilizer is used to nourish the institution’s gardens, closing the sustainable cycle and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. In addition, the project also serves as an educational tool to raise awareness among students about the importance of reuse and care for the environment.

EcoTrilha was created in 2017 in partnership with UVS Essencis Betim and Viasolo Betim. Open to the public, the trail runs through an environment rich in trees, plants, and wildlife, offering a unique experience for people of all ages.

This initiative brings the Ramacrisna community closer to nature and is an important tool for environmental education, in line with the Institute’s mission to promote a positive social impact while protecting the environment.

Renewable energy and social impact

In August 2020, the Institute installed a photovoltaic plant that generates clean, renewable energy through solar panels positioned on the roofs. This initiative has enabled savings of around 90% on the electricity bill.

The resources saved are reinvested in social projects, expanding the scope and quality of the services offered. This initiative also strengthens Ramacrisna’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles. But more than This contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) and SDG 13 (climate action).

In addition, Ramacrisna participates in a partnership with the Rotary Club BH Liberdade, which enabled the construction of four other plants in social organizations in Minas Gerais, expanding the social and environmental impact in the region.

Finally, in partnership with Cemig, the Institute replaced old motors, light bulbs, and wiring with energy-efficient equipment. All of the institution’s light bulbs are LED, which consume less energy and have greater durability, reducing environmental impact and operating costs.

Ramacrisna’s commitment to ESG and SDGs

Ramacrisna acts firmly in practices aligned with ESG principles and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, its actions combine environmental preservation with social strengthening, forming conscious citizens, qualified professionals, and more sustainable communities.
