Inside Ramacrisna: audiovisual classes changed the life of Nicanor Vieira Mendes

A former student from the first Antenados class built a solid career in audiovisual after training at Ramacrisna.

When it comes to opportunity and transformation, the Ramacrisna Institute is a benchmark. An example of this is the story of Nicanor Vieira Mendes, 33. That’s because, in 2007, he was part of the then Antenados Project.

At the time, it was just a project for young people interested in journalism and communication. Although it was an initiative that was still in its infancy, it was there that he found a professional path that aligned his curiosity with solid and practical training. Today, he is a film reporter for Band Minas.

From the first class to the job market

Nicanor was part of the first class of the project that would become Antenados Produtora. “I have lived in the Marimbá neighborhood for 31 years and have always heard about Ramacrisna. Many people in the neighborhood who studied or took courses there commented that the institution offered free classes and training courses,” he says.

That’s when he learned about a new course: a project where young people would have the opportunity to learn the basics of communication through audiovisual and journalism classes. He didn’t know it at the time, but that project would become Antenados Produtora.

Today, the initiative not only trains young people to work in the audiovisual market, but also offers cutting-edge audiovisual services to individuals and companies. For Nicanor, the course was not just about classes: it was an opportunity. “The institution was fundamental to my social and professional growth. Through Antenados, I had experiences and learned lessons that contributed to my development as a person,” he says.

Shortly after completing the audiovisual course, Nicanor received a recommendation from a teacher for his first job opportunity: a position at TV Betim, a local broadcaster, where he worked for about seven years. It was his first job and, at the same time, a milestone that consolidated his entry into the market.

But it didn’t stop there. He then went on to work at TV Band Minas, where he has been working as a film reporter to this day.

Nicanor’s story shows a virtuous cycle: quality training, constant practice, and entry into the formal market. “The Institute had a big impact on my life, not just in the beginning. In the course, I learned my profession and other skills that help me better understand my work. Ramacrisna was essential for the work I do today,” he emphasizes.

Today, he plans to grow professionally, is already studying journalism in higher education, and also dreams of starting a family.

What are Ramacrisna’s audiovisual classes like today?

The audiovisual course at Antenados Produtora was structured to promote consistent learning in the areas of communication and audiovisual production, combining theory and practice so that students leave ready to face the challenges of the sector. Classes include:

  • Photography
  • Cinematography
  • Image editing
  • Design

In addition, at the end of the course, participants develop a practical final project, which is an opportunity to apply technical knowledge, experiment with languages, and build an initial portfolio. Classes are in person, for people between the ages of 15 and 40 who are at least in high school.

This combination of supervised practice and up-to-date content creates a learning environment in which students develop visual repertoire, mastery of equipment and software, for example. In addition, students develop important social-emotional skills for teamwork and content production routines.

With the aim of promoting the sector, generating income for the Institute, and opening doors for socially vulnerable young people, in 2014, the Antenados Project became Antenados Produtora. The social project, which was created to offer young people the chance to become content producers and agents of change in society, has grown and become a video production company that, in addition to training, began offering audiovisual services to companies and individuals throughout the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region. Students who participated in the project became employees and are now in charge of the unit’s educational and professional programs. Among the clients who have already placed their trust in its projects are Porto Seguro, Fiat, BrazilFoundation, and Petrobras, for example. This line of work strengthens the project’s sustainability, expands the students’ repertoire, and proves the quality of what is produced within the Institute.
