Even with the arrival of new technologies all the time, the role of libraries in the digital age is essential for the dissemination of knowledge and information.
In addition to helping with literacy, in the library it is possible to have access to the resources necessary for research and the discovery of new ideas, realities, cultures and perspectives.
At Instituto Ramacrisna we know the transformative role that libraries play. For 48 years, the Ramacrisna Library has helped expand the universe of children and young people in socially vulnerable situations, opening the doors of the literary world to them. Continue reading to find out more.
From the Greek, library means deposit of books. The term defines a space that promotes knowledge and culture. Despite the speed and exchange of information that the digital age allows, libraries are essential for people to have better access to literature.
Nowadays, it is possible to read through online platforms, but nothing replaces the physical book. It’s easier to concentrate to read a paper book, as when you start a chapter, there are no other distractions to interrupt your reading.
According to a survey carried out by the IBGE, in Brazil, 44% of the population does not read and 30% have never bought a book in their lives. And the worst: the country has been losing readers with each new survey.
These numbers are alarming, as reading improves human development. Through books, it is possible to stimulate reasoning, exercise creativity, improve vocabulary, in addition to providing the reader with broad and diverse knowledge on various subjects.
Literature is essential, especially when we think about children. Those who have the habit of reading, write and interpret better throughout their lives.
Another important point is that in order to learn to read, a stage considered decisive in the literacy process, it is necessary to constantly practice reading different texts.
Ramacrisna values literature in all aspects. The Institute has an environment dedicated to literature: the Professor Arlindo Corrêa da Silva Library.
The space was named after the founder of Ramacrisna. With 194 m², it has a collection of children’s and adult literature with more than 9 thousand books cataloge.
The space serves all students enrolled in Ramacrisna, employees, the entire community and young people from 11 municipalities in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte.
The main characteristic of the Ramacrisna Library is that it is not restricted to walls, since it has several projects to encourage itinerant reading. In addition, it uses the entire space of the institution, which makes it possible to practice reading in a pleasant, comfortable and pleasant way, in gardens, lawns, under trees or in kiosks.
Another differential of the library is that, in 2020, with the support of Fundação Dorina Nowill, a space with a collection in Braille and audiobooks began to be set up to serve readers with disabilities.
