Construindo o Futuro: how does dance help children and adolescents?

The Construindo o Futuro (Building the Future) project offers Ballet and Zumba to children and teenagers from three communities in Betim. See how activities support personal and social development.

The Construindo o Futuro project, developed by the Instituto Ramacrisna, sponsored by Petrobras, promotes activities as a form of social inclusion for children and adolescents in the Imbiruçu, Colônia Santa Isabel and Petrovale neighborhoods. The three communities are neighbors to REGAP, in Betim.

In addition, these actions seek to give protagonism to the population, contributing to a socio-educational process that transforms the individual and society as a whole, in addition to promoting the sustainable development of the community where they are inserted..

Among these actions, three stand out: ballet, capoeira and zumba. Classical dance and zumba are offered to children from 6 to 17 years old at Núcleo Colônia Santa Isabel. Students from the municipal schools Sebastiana Diniz Mattos Cardoso and Abílio Gomes da Costa, in the Imbiruçu nucleus, can enjoy capoeira classes.

In addition to encouraging the practice of physical activities, dances bring several benefits to those who practice. check out.

Ballet: body expression and discipline

One of the main gains of ballet is in body development. In addition to improving posture, classical dancing improves elasticity and reflexes. But it also explores body expression, showing how movements can represent feelings.

In addition to self-knowledge, this helps in improving interpersonal relationships. On the other hand, ballet shows the child the importance of concentration, self-discipline and memory. After all, the more you rehearse, the better the presentation.

What usually happens is that the child takes this practice to the classroom, improving learning and discipline at school.

Finally, ballet is a way to expand knowledge. Since, for many, it is their first contact with classical music.

Zumba: Fun and Attention

In Zumba, students do not rehearse a choreography, but repeat the steps of an instructor. Therefore, it takes attention and agility to keep up with the rhythm.

Plus, the steps are simple, which makes the class perfect for relieving stress and relaxing. The fact that they are often well-known songs can win over children and teenagers more easily.

At school, students who practice dance end up dedicating themselves more to the content, paying more attention to the teachers and assimilating the content more easily.

Capoeira: Respect and Brazilianness

Despite looking like a fight, capoeira can be considered a dance. Blows are like choreographies, which need to work in perfect harmony to work. One of the main pillars of capoeira is respect for others. That’s because the blows – or steps – can’t hit the opponent.

Capoeira also needs agility, body knowledge and flexibility. In practice, the child releases stress and focuses on the steps. So it’s a great way to learn how to have concentration and self-confidence.

Finally, swaying capoeira is knowing about yourself and our country. Capoeira practitioners access several important information about Brazilian culture, considerably expanding their knowledge of the popular culture of their country.

Popular and traditional songs from Africa, musical instruments made with natural ingredients, among other important elements, contribute to the expansion of knowledge. In the case of black children and adolescents, it also has a benefit on their self-esteem.
