Through sport, Ramacrisna helps promote the civic development of vulnerable children and young people
More than just discovering young athletes, sports projects have great social value. This is because, through them, social institutions help to promote citizenship training for people in social vulnerability. In addition, it brings various health benefits to those who practise it, improving body awareness and controlling overweight, for example.
But it doesn’t stop there. Sports projects also bring benefits to the athletes’ families and the community. Health promotion, social inclusion, physical and mental development are just some of the benefits
Knowing this, Ramacrisna has taken on the mission of offering opportunities for everyone to practise sport, benefiting from this powerful tool for social transformation and promoting well-being. Find out more about the Institute’s sports projects below.
The initiative is part of the Ramacrisna Educational Support Centre (CAER), which caters for schoolchildren enrolled in public schools. The project includes different workshops. Among them, sports.
The idea is to democratise physical activity and leisure, promoting health and well-being. To this end, the children take part in sporting, pedagogical, playful activities, digital and cultural insertion to form citizen values on the court, at school and in life.
In the project, the children take part in futsal, football society, shuttlecock, chess, judo and volleyball workshops. In addition, athletes from the Sports and Recreation Centre have the opportunity to take part in competitions and championships.
The workshops are held at Ramacrisna’s headquarters in Betim. There is a multi-sports court, a grass football pitch, a playground and a leisure area with kiosks, tables and benches that are made available to the community for sports championships, leisure time and games in general.
With sponsorship from Vale and Weg, through the Federal Sports Incentive Law, Ramacrisna promotes Tatame Cidadão, a project that offers judo classes to children and teenagers aged 8 to 18, completely free of charge.
The workshops take place three times a week. The aim of the project is to encourage the practice of sport, integrate, integrate and socialise people and discover new talents.
Focussed on the population of the Vianópolis region in Betim, the Sport in Movement project offers sports activities for children and teenagers from the age of six. The disciplines include 7-a-side football, futsal, volleyball, judo and basketball. All free of charge.
The initiative aims to provide students with access to Educational Sport, practised in unsystematic forms of education, avoiding selectivity and hyper-competitiveness in its practitioners. The project is sponsored by Vale, Goldman Sachs Banco, Goldman Sachs Corretora and Itaú Social through the Federal Sports Incentive Law.
Focussing on chess, the Xeque Mate project, run by the Ramacrisna Institute, is sponsored by Vale through the Federal Sports Incentive Law. The initiative seeks to promote sporting experiences through chess and robotics workshops, benefiting 448 children and young people aged between 6 and 18 who are socially vulnerable, public school students and residents of Betim.
The idea is to provide access to Educational Sport, practised in the best education systems and in unsystematic forms of education, thus preventing young people on lower incomes from being excluded from the market due to lack of opportunity.
Another sports project is run in partnership with Betim City Hall, through the Municipal Sports Department. Viva o Esporte/Ramacrisna offers sports activities to residents of the whole city, aged four and over. People of all ages and genders with and without disabilities can take part.
In all, around 4,000 people take part in the project every year. There are 11 sports centres, which offer the following sports completely free of charge:
“Live the Sport” also offers students psychological, physiotherapeutic and social assistance. In other words, the initiative contributes to improving physical and mental health, the exercise of citizenship and human transformation.
With sports activities taking place in the Petrovale and Imbiruçu neighbourhoods, as well as in the towns of Ibirité and Sarzedo, the project offers basketball, futsal, volleyball, handball and capoeira.
For 64 years, the Ramacrisna Institute has been transforming the lives of millions of socially vulnerable people living in 12 cities in the BH metropolitan region. Since its creation, the institution has invested in sports projects as a powerful way of engaging in dialogue with children, young people and adults.
